Philippine National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has arrested the Cameroonian wife of a detainee for allegedly extorting money from a relative of another detainee in exchange for the latter's release. The suspect was apprehended in a sting operation in Paranaque City, where she was caught receiving a bag containing 1 million pesos in cash.
According to the initial report from the NBI, the detained Cameroonian was allegedly offering a "freedom for a fee" scheme to other detainees, demanding 8 million pesos for the release. Once a deal was struck with the detained or incarcerated individuals, the Cameroonian would then contact his wife.
"The Cameroonian claimed to have a group of hackers outside who could access the immigration's emails. Our victim initially gave 870,000 pesos, but when he failed to raise the 8 million required, the Cameroonian began threatening him, saying that he could worsen the victim's case and extend his detention. The suspect even raised the amount from 8 million to 12 million, but eventually negotiated it down to an additional 1 million pesos," the agency added.
"It's unbelievable that he could still communicate with the outside and give orders to people. He can even use online chat tools. He's in jail but still able to commit crimes," stated the NBI.
Concurrently, the Bureau of Immigration is working with the NBI to investigate the incident. Immigration spokesperson Dana Sandoval stated, "We are coordinating with the NBI to determine the details of this crime and whether there are other accomplices who may face extortion charges."
